Originated in 1973, the previous name was the Whitbread Global Race. In 2001, it officially changed its name to the Volvo Ocean Race. The competition lasted 9 months and the participating teams must have 9 stops around the world and a total of 39,000 nautical miles. The 2011 & mdash; 2012 season is the eleventh successful event of this event, with a total of six participating teams. All teams set off from Alicante in Spain in October 2012 and ended in Galway, Ireland in July 2012.
